UFO Sunday: 2 Steps Forward, 1 Step Back

As I try to get caught up on my UFO's (unfinished objects), I've been linking up lately with UFO Sunday over at Leah Day's blog, The Free Motion Quilting Project.  I'm happy to report that I did meet my goal of getting my 2 small quilts pin basted, and even finished quilting one of them (with "railroad tracks" from Leah's blog).  I'm hoping to get these 2 quilts finished this week.

As I've been chipping away at these projects, I've been feeling a stronger and stronger urge to start a new project.  I have been trying to satisfy the urge by making small projects (that get finished).  I've done a few of these the last few weeks, including a few postcards for a swap I'm in, and some new place mats and oven mitt.

But I finally caved and also started curtains for my son's room, and a new quilt (gulp).  Hmmm... Maybe that title should read 1 step forward, 2 steps back (blush).

How do you resit the urge to start something new?

  1. It depends. If I have too many WIPs on the go, I give myself a stern talking-to then pick up a WIP. But if I have finished a few in the last while and my project list is a little shorter, I indulge in a new project. Preferably something quick to finish and/or that I've promised someone. I like the positive reinforcement of a finished project and a well-received gift!

  2. Sometimes, I just don't resist! But, I have a goal for Christmas that is keeping me in check these days as it will be here before we know it!

  3. Me... I move... I don't start anything new.... but on the other hand I don't get much finished either. I need to remember placemats!

  4. I'm with felicity, it's all a balance. So long as finished quilts are leaving the sewing room, then you're doing it right. The tricky part is being able to split focus between multiple projects at once so they don't all become UFOs.

  5. I think it's a hard thing to balance! There area so many new projects or ideas out there that I want to try, and but so many things I haven't yet finished. The tipping point was when I literally didn't want to walk into my sewing room because I felt guilty about all the UFOs. That was a sign I needed to make some serious progress on them!

  6. I'm trying hard to resist too, I keep telling myself how good it will feel to actually finish something and so far that is working. I also have several UFOs that I'm working on which at least gives me a choice! I don't think I will ever be a start-to-finish quilter as much I would like to be... sigh.

  7. Oh the temptation is strong. I try to resist but I think everyone should work with their own balance. Get the new projects completely finished so they don't become UFOs and then you can go back to the UFO list with a new heart.

  8. Since I have finished 18 quilts so far this year, I don't worry too much about starting something new. One of the things I love about this UFO Blog project is that I started taking time one day a week, usually Sundays, to work on a UFO. This way I can work on new ideas and know that I am giving the old UFO's the attention they need.
